About Us
This historical account was compiled by Farris Stewart in June of 2010. For the purposes of the website, it has been edited down for length.
The Buck Lodge Church of Christ has a history that dates back to the late 1800s. It began with Brother John H. Curry who, after moving to Tennessee in 1890, began preaching in 1891. He did so at the Buck Lodge schoolhouse on Saturday nights and then meeting again on Sunday mornings to observe the Lord's Supper. In those early years, baptisms were done in nearby Drakes Creek.
In 1932, the church began meeting on Sunday afternoons to allow more visitors to attend. The church continued to meet in the old schoolhouse thoughout the 1930's and 1940's. In 1955, a new building was built at the present site on what is now A.B. Wade Rd.
Since 1955, a number of faithful men of God have preached here in some capacity including: Farris Baird, Luther Weathers Sr., Luther Weathers, Jr., Buddy Coss (nephew of Bro. Baird), Garvin Smith, P.G. Speer, Duke Gregory, Charlie Pearson, Wayne Pryor, Charlie Tidwell, Jess Beasley, Benton Graves, Perry Hunter, Tom Hagewood, W.C. Reeder, John Robertson, Lloyd Sadler, John Bracken, James Parker, James Harris, C.L. Powell, Glendle Slate, Harold Knight, George Whitson, and Nathan Knight.
Over the years, a number of improvements and additions had been made to the original 1955 building. But by the 1990s, it was evident that the extent of repairs and renovations needed would be cost prohibitive so a building fund was started and by 2007, the time was right to begin construction. While it took time due to stricter building codes, the congregation received its Certificate of Occupancy in April of 2010 to begin meeting in the new building.
While the building may have changed and many good brothers and sisters in Christ are no longer with us, Buck Lodge Church of Christ continues to meet to worship & study & fellowship in The Lord as they did when they began in 1891. We stand by the simple yet timeless teachings of God's Word striving to "speak where the Bible speaks and be silent where the Bible is silent."
Buck Lodge stands firm upon the mission of the church to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ purely and without alteration all in the hope that souls will continue to be saved by the grace, mercy, and love of God and in the name of Jesus Christ His Son.
